- Your teen does not need a current driver permit to attend the classroom sessions. We schedule more than 25 classes a year. Classes are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and Monday/Wednesdays. Choose a class as a primary schedule, one your teen will attend most often, and list it as your first choice on the Teen Registration. The class numbers are in bold at the top of each schedule e.g.: GO-305.
- During school vacations we schedule one-week classes. The one-week classes allow students with heavy academic requirements to complete their driver education in a short period of time without interfering with school work.
- Your teen has the flexibility to "Make-Up" missed sessions on any of our University Avenue Instructors' schedules.
- The driver education classroom curriculum is divided into 10 sessions. Each session covers specific information and most do not require information from previous classes to comprehend. For sessions that require previous information, a review of that information is incorporated into the session's curriculum.
- The sessions can be attended in any sequence and may be started in any session.
- Classes are designed on a Power Point platform to ensure a duplication of curriculum among our Instructors. The classes are interesting and multidimensional, combining lecture, discussion, video clips, and group activities. We project a 6 foot diagonal picture and videos include full stereo sound.
- We utilize the Responsible Driving textbooks published in 2000 by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. The Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Responsible Driving program is developed in partnership with AAA, the American Automobile Association. The arrangement of curriculum is designed by ADTSEA (American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association).
- Our instructors follow the same programs for classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. We conduct instructor meetings regularly to promote consistency of information.
Behind-The-Wheel Training:
- We require the student have a current driver permit and completed sessions 3 & 4 before starting their Behind-The-Wheel training. Sessions 3 & 4 provide the student with in-vehicle procedures, driving procedures and basic traffic laws.
- Instructors utilize a check-list to ensure consistency of training. All lessons are private and conducted on a one-on-one basis.
- An assigned driving instructor will contact your family directly to schedule dates, times and locations that fit both the student's and the instructor's schedules. The State of Hawai'i allows each BTW lesson to be no longer than 1 1/2 hours. Instructors will schedule the BTW lessons as six 1-hour lessons, four 1 1/2-hour lessons or a combination of the two.
- Please review the topics covered each training session with your teen and practice the learned skills to accelerate the learning process.
- If the student cannot perform the learned skills at a minimal level of competency, the instructor may postpone a lesson to allow you more time to practice.
- Instructors do not practice the road test course unless the student has completed all items on the check-list. Our goal is for the student to learn Proper Driving Skills. You may, however, hire the BTW instructor for additional hours to specifically prepare for the road test, instructors are familiar with all road test areas.
If you make arrangements for your teen to schedule BTW with another driving school be sure to follow these requirements:
- Your teen cannot complete the classroom sessions in less than six weeks.
- Your teen cannot complete the BTW sessions in less than six weeks.
